Happy Easter!

Caravaggio

One of my favorite paintings of Jesus’ resurrection appearances is this one by Caravaggio titled “The Incredulity of Thomas”. Like Thomas, I would want to reach out and know for myself that the one I loved and followed was definitely raised from the dead. The mystery of God’s limitless love for humanity is captured in Jesus’ invitation for Thomas to reach out (John 20:27). Caravaggio captures this intimacy and shows that not only Thomas, but two other disciples were curious as well. Jesus himself is looking at his wound.

Christian faith in the Risen Lord is an acceptance of God’s unending love. St. Paul described that love this way in Romans 8:38-39, “ For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

We may ride the wave of wanting certainty like Thomas, but it is God who offers us the comfort of boundless love today and always.

Happy Easter! Alleluia! Alleluia!
